Padparadscha: Gemstone or what else?

Without doubt, Padparadscha is the most expensive Fancy Sapphire for carat price.

Some people say this Corundum variety has a salmon color, others say it has the sunset color.
Long time ago, it was considered Padparadscha any Gemstone displaying a color from reddish-Orange to orangy-Pink in any hue and saturation. But lately the color range has become much more stringent.

The inhabitants of Sri Lanka have a particular love for this Stone, which in Sri Lankan means Lotus blossom.
Many say that only Sri Lanka produces the true Padparadscha. But, in recent years, interesting mines are also emerging in East Africa (Madagascar and Tanzania).

Some alleged experts claimed that the true Padparadscha came only from Sri Lanka.
It is true that for centuries Sri Lanka was the only source of the orange-pink Corundum variety, but it is also true that these Gems of Madagascar are classified as Padparadscha. The Padapradscha from Madagascar have a pink component usually more pronounced than the orange component.

The burning splendor of Padparadscha Gemstone is mesmerizing. Its beauty is incredible.
There are no Stones in the world with this exotic mix of colors.

The Gemology scandal of biblical dimensions

One of the biggest international scandals broke out because of this Gemstone in 2001.
The G.I.A gemmologists accused the Thai treaters to turn Pink Sapphires from Madagascar into Padparadscha. In the method used by the Thais was involved the new Beryllium Lattice Diffusion tecnique.
Everything was repeatedly denied by the Thais. But G.I.A. he warned the Gemological world of placing an enormous quantity of stones on the market without the revelation of the new treatment.
The Thai Stone dealers continued to deny until they were forced to admit the truth despite of the overwhelming evidence. This caused a temporary collapse in the Padparadscha market.

Padparadscha Gemstone record

It is quite difficult to find a Padparadscha weighing more than two carats. The cause is the rarity of large-sized rough. In fact, when this Corundum variety exceeds five carats, it ends up directly into the largest auctions of the Earth.
The largest Padparadscha Gemstone is located in the American Museum of Natural History, in New York. The exact weight of this natural wonder is 100.18 carats.

Padparadscha Mounting Tricks

A Padparadscha showing a strong pink color often fits perfectly on a yellow mounting.
If instead the orange component is more visible, the platinum or white gold mounting is well suited.

Many famous Padparadscha were mounted in rings with flush setting. Sometimes they are seen assembled in rings with tension setting.
The most classic mounting is the Cluster ring, in which we see a central Padparadscha surrounded by white Diamonds.
